Greetings from the Mice and Gnomes!

Here’s my new cabinet of curiousities.  Drum roll please….

I admit it has been a long time since my last post but happily I’m back on my feet and back to creating!  Yay!

The bell jar village is currently under construction so apologies to everyone who have missed the mice and gnomes.  We miss you all too!

Sneak Peek: The Hollow Tree Library

From seagulls to parrots and cockatoos.  I’ve just moved to a quaint wooden house on top of a hill somewhere near the Dandenong Ranges.  Quite a sea change after being so used to life near the beach.  Thus explains why I have been creatively dormant for the past two months.  Luckily, I have been slowly getting my groove back and started to make the Hollow Tree Library even though the house is still packed with a jumble of unopened moving boxes.

The Hollow Tree Library is made from a piece of driftwood I found in Altona Beach.  The mushrooms are made from paper clay and actually glow in the dark.  I hope I can capture the glow of the mushrooms when I take photos of the finished piece.

Here’s a view of the back of the tree.  Although the leaves look real, let’s just say I don’t need to worry about it changing its autumn colours.  O yeah, there’s a smattering of ladybugs too.

I still don’t know what to put in this new bell jar theme.  I’ll figure it out soon. Stay tuned!

From the Archives: Drums & Dreadlocks

Marley was supposedly part of the Frogpond Symphony Orchestra but just didn’t quite fit in.  This gnome with his drum and dreadlocks marches to the beat of a different drummer.

Months before Marley was only just bits of clay glued together unfinished, lonely, and gathering dust in my apothecary cabinet.   Then someone sent me a souvenir keychain with a tiny drum and thought it would be nice for my “leftover” gnome.

See the fairy door behind Marley?  I made it months ago and never really found the ideal bell jar for it. So like Marley, the fairy door was just sitting on the shelf.

I decided to give Marley and the forgotten fairy door a new lease on life and gave them their very own bell jar. Because everybody, even gnomes and fairy doors, deserve a second chance.

The Knave and the Tart

The Queen of Hearts she made some tarts all on a summer’s day; the Knave of Hearts he stole a tart and hid behind my stack of dishes to quietly eat the tart away.  Meet Pudding, master tart pilferer and gourmand extraordinaire.

Pudding will be finding his way soon to the kitchen of my Lola Vicky, who is a gourmand herself.  A perfect combination, don’t you think?

Happy Birthday Life in a Bell Jar!

It’s my blog’s first birthday!  Hooray!  It has been a great year!  So far I’ve made a total of 12 themed ball jars, more than a dozen mice, and a handful of gnomes.  Not bad for a total newbie!  To be honest, before 2011, I didn’t even know how to make the mice and gnomes.  Now I love the craft so much, I can’t think of letting a week pass by without needle felting.

What’s in store for 2012?  More fun themes, quirky mice and gnomes, and The Life in a Bell Jar Mice & Gnomes Adoption Agency!

By the way, I like you to meet Bailey, a dumbo mouse.  Catch his balancing act soon!

You can even say it glows…

Twiddles is a reindeer mouse.  Little is known about this rare breed of mice found only in a small patch of vegetation west of Melbourne.  Scientists are baffled why reindeer mice, usually looking like any other mice on any non-public holiday, suddenly sprout antlers and red glowing noses come mid-December.

With a diet of peppermint lollies, eggnog, and fruit cake, reindeer mice have a perpetual sugar high.  Pretty handy during that mad rush to prepare for the silly season.  Twiddles helped me, or tried to help me, decorate the tree. The trimming and fairy lights do bring out the natural red glow of his nose.

Twiddles has already left for the north pole (with my trimmings and fairy lights!) to join the annual sleigh ride and nibble on the sack of goodies before kids around the world receive their presents.  On Christmas eve, aside from the usual milk and cookies, please do leave a peppermint lolly for this little hitchhiker.

Merry Christmas everyone!

The Life in a Jar Bell Mice & Gnomes Adoption Agency: Strawberry Sam

See that teeny tiny link on the sidebar about “The Life in a Bell Jar Mice & Gnomes Adoption Agency“? It’s the only place where you can adopt a mouse or a gnome from the Bell Jar Village.  The Adoption Agency will be opening early next year.  I’m about to give you a taste of what’s to come.  It tastes like strawberries actually.

Meet Strawberry Sam. Born on December 3, 2011, this mouse likes picking fresh strawberries…from the fridge.

Strawberry Sam likes hot cocoa and marshmallows. Oh yeah.. he also likes long walks on the beach.  A true romantic.

A strawberry hat makes this mouse incognito in a bowl of strawberries, although his pink tail is a dead giveaway.

Coming soon to the Life in a Bell Jar Mice & Gnomes Adoption Agency.  Please adopt Strawberry Sam!  Fresh strawberries not included.
